How do you run your business??

This is a post I did a few years back on my old blog and after gettting another email referencing the appreciation for this knowledge, I figured it might be good to bring this particular post to the new blog. So except for a few changes this is pretty much copied from the one I did years ago. A few things to remember while reading… this information is for the state of NC (it does vary by state) and at any time this may change. So even though this gives good information, make sure you are taking the time to check into what your county and state says.

So many people (mom’s in particular) pick up a digital camera, take a few photos, and overnight become a photographer.  I’m not knocking it because I had a similar journey! But what this post will address is the business part of photography.  Many people reading this will say…. well I don’t really make money at it, so I don’t consider it a business.  I may challenge that with….. “Do you have a business name, do you have a website or Facebook fan page, do your charge for your pictures, do you have a logo or do you advertise your services?”  If the answer to any of those is yes, then I would say you probably are running a business, you are just trying to avoid the business part of it.  A lot of people combat that with…”But I don’t make any money, I’m just learning!” And even though that may be true, most businesses don’t make a profit during their first few years. Matter of fact, a typical business takes 5 years before it shows a profit.  But not making a profit does not eliminate you from the responsibilities you have with a business.

For me one of the hardest parts of being a photographer is the actual business part.  The book keeping, the payroll, the taxes, any one of those words can easily send me into a panic attack!!! But in all honesty I think just me knowing my weaknesses gives me an advantage in my business.  I know that sounds crazy but for me, I know I stink in those areas so I find qualified people that can help! To start with, my mom does all my book keeping. Not only is she 100% trustworthy but that is what her career was for years.  If there is a penny missing, she will crunch those numbers until it is balanced. And then I have an amazing CPA, Alex Pappas with H. Edwin Gray, that handles all my payroll, taxes, and any crazy questions I can muster. And by handle, he literally send me the forms I need to send each quarter with a little sticky that says…sign here with an addressed envelope and a sheet listing how much goes in each envelope.  On occasion I get people that ask how much my CPA cost me and my answer is always the same….”It’s not cheap but it’s worth it!” When it comes down to it, I know my business is being run the right way. Every business owner has to decide what they spend their money on and for me it’s a no brainer!! I’m going to pay to have an expert help me with the business part because simply, I’m clueless!

So, if you are one of those people trying to slide by and not pay taxes because, “it’s just a hobby”.  Then let it be a hobby and do what you love to do without the money involved.  But if you want to be a photographer and earn money, step up and do it right. Because if you don’t and you get caught, it won’t be good!! Just recently I called the NC Department of Revenue to settle some questions I had concerning sales tax. You see in our lovely state, photographers have to pay sales tax on everything not just their products!! That’s right…session fees, labor, anything we charge for is subject to the 7% sales tax.  This is something a lot of photographers don’t even realize.  Most photographers think sales tax is only applicable to their products, such as prints, albums, etc.  But in the state of North Carolina that couldn’t be further from the truth.. The auditor I spoke to personally showed me on the site where the bulletins where outlining it and proceeded to tell me, tons and tons of photographers have been audited on their sales tax over the past couple of years and have been caught not paying it correctly. So to any NC photographer that is not paying 7% sales tax on all their sales, please start!!! The auditor even told me that most of the ones caught weren’t doing it because they just didn’t know.  But not knowing doesn’t eliminate your responsibility when you run a business. If you are like me and you don’t know the business part, get a book keeper and a great CPA (if you need one I happen to know one).  You may think it’s a lot but I promise the penalties and fees for doing it wrong is worse!!

So there it is, my latest rants and raves.  This may not be a popular post and I’m fine with that but I’ll leave you with a image to remind you of how you may feel if you get caught doing it wrong……

Dear Boo…..

Dear Boo,

Today was the last time I will ever hug you or kiss you. I will no longer see your face as soon as I walk through the door or hear the little taps of your nails on the floor as you trot around our home. I will never look down at 2am while I am still editing and see you faithfully laying beside me. I will never get to sneak you on the bed again and snuggle with you because Dad said no more Boo on the bed. I will never get to tell you to stop cleaning yourself like a cat, clean up the gobs of hair that you daily lost that should at some point make you hairless because really how much hair could a little dog loose, or get to say that you can officially eat anything you heart desires because today I said my final good bye to you.  I have to say, I never could have imagined 16 years ago the journey I would be on with you!!

You have been my protector, my confidant, my lil shadow, and my best friend!! When I brought you home, you where so tiny and scared. You whimpered as I opened the fridge, cried as I cut on the stove, and wailed when I tried to play with you….. you boo hoo’ed all the time those first few days hence your name Boo. But that trait quickly changed!! You grew quickly into a feisty and funny dog. Dad still loves to tell the story of you chasing the cow through the field with me screaming right behind, sure you were going to get trampled. And I’ll never forget when that cow realized a lil runt was chasing him and decided to turn around, no longer be pursued but became the pursuer … we looked like an episode from scooby doo as that cow chased me and you through the field! Or how we literally almost pulled you out of Chad’s dogs mouth because you didn’t care he had 50lbs on, you were going to get that food that dropped. Or the way the word “bath” turned you into the tazmanian devil as you ran around the house spinning and turning, sure that this time you would escape me my hands and the evil water. Or even the times you would literally run from dad and hide under our king size bed right smack dap in the middle, just out of his reach, and dare him with your terrifying growls and snaps to try and grab you. And I’ll never forget how after bringing Justice home, you stationed yourself under his bassinet and snapped at any strange feet if they dare get too close. Or the way when my daddy died you let me hold you and sob into your fur when everyone else was gone. And I never imagined how I would sob uncontrollably as I made the decision that you had fought long enough. I never imagined how a quiet house could be almost deafening or how loosing you could shatter my heart but I know it was time.

I’m sure as time goes on, my heart will heal but today the tears are steady and the hurt is physically tangible. I already miss you a million times over but I can honestly say it was time to let go. There will never be another ankle biter that can steal my heart like you did… you were one in a million and I was blessed to call you mine!!!

I love you Boo Boo chuttin chuttin always and forever!!!!!

Thanks again to Will at Capturing Canines for capturing these amazing shots of our Boo!!!

Morgan - January 7, 2015 - 8:42 am

I’m so incredibly sorry for your loss Laurie. Losing a dog is one of the most painful events in life, but you’ll see him again. Even the Pope says animals go to heaven. :). XOXO!

Wedding – Ayden Golf & Country Club – Steffani & Michael

Yes, again this is way past due but what better day to release this post than on Michael’s birthday!!! I have known Michael since he was a teenager, so when I found out he was getting married it was kinda surreal… could he really be that old? Could I really be that old?? Well I guess that answer was yes because it was happening!! Michael was marrying his high school sweetheart and I don’t know if there is another person that fits and balances Michael as much as Steffani does! If you ever have met Steff, you know there has never been a question as to why Michael loves her.. Steffani is kind, gentle, she looks for the best in people, she’s funny, and she is simply beautiful!!

As they said their I do’s, I snapped away and I may have even shed a few tears!! As crazy and silly as Michael can be, he is also a hopeless romantic that is completely and utterly in love with his bride! I loved that they chose me to share in their day, seeing their family and friends celebrate into the night warmed my heart!! It is clear of the love that surrounds them and it makes me smile!!

So take a jump back with me and see some of  my favorite images from their fan-tab-u-lous day!!!

Steff & Michael I love you both!!!
