Bridal Portrait – Rose Hill Conference Center & Linclonton NC – Mari B

Again, another post that should have been posted months ago but still just as appealing as the day it was shot!!

When Mari originally contacted me and said she was getting married at Rose Hill Conference Center I may have come close to passing out. A mother of a past bride mentioned this countryside estate located in the heart of Nash County, so I took a trip to Nashville to see what it was all about.  The first time I drove down the private country lane, lined with fantastic crepe myrtle trees I knew I was sold. From the perfectly manicured grounds, to the lush rolling hills it was a perfect set up for a spectacular wedding!!

So when discussing places to do her bridal session it was no surprise Mari chose this 18th-century countryside setting with a touch of modern elegance to do the first part.  First part you may say, yes she did 2 separate parts!! The first part took place at Rose Hill and the second part couldn’t have been more meaningful and fitting! For the second part we headed to the western part of the state, to her fiance’s home town of Lincolnton to finish it up!! And the results were remarkable.  Not only where we able to use locations special to her soon to be husband but her willingness to try anything opened the door to such fun ideas!!

Mari, I can not say thank you enough for choosing me to be a part of your entire experience. Working with you and your family was one of the best experieces I could have asked for!!  Thanks again for letting me do what you hired me to do!!! xo

I was one of the bridesmaids in Mari’s wedding and I swear you have one of the best eyes for a photographer I have ever seen. I just love you pictures and Mari looks like a model and I don’t think they could have come out any better! I just hope you won’t be retired when ever I get married!

My forever hero….

For many of you that follow me you know 3 years ago today after 18 months of a hard battle with cancer my Daddy finally went home to be with his Creator. What many of you do not know is from the beginning of this journey I asked God to allow me to be there when he took his final breath here on earth but I followed it with, if I can’t handle this I ask you to protect me from it. God honored my request and I was with him and my mom the  last week of his life. I watched as my mom cared for Dad in such a tender way. I watched as she loved him with an unconditional love that I have never personally witnessed.

On the morning of January 18, 2009 my request was granted. As I entered the room where mom slept beside of Dad I knelt at his bed to give him the medicine hospice had given us to ease his pain.  I saw mom stir and sit up and I told her to go back to sleep I could handle it. As I had done for days previous I watched as his chest slowly rose and fell.  After I made sure he was breathing I gave him the medicine given to us by hospice to ease the pain in his final stages. We had been taught to keep his head raised about 5 minutes as we gave the medicine to make sure it would absorb since he could no longer swallow. As I knelt beside the bed with his head cradled in my hand I gently rested my head on his bed to wait for the minutes to pass. When I raised my head 5 minutes later, out of habit I looked at his chest. Before I could alert mom she sat up and looked at me. With short, shallow breathes I told her I didn’t think he was breathing. After calling his name and trying to rouse him she told me he was gone.  My wish had been honored, I had the honor of being with Daddy as he took his last breath just as I had asked. With a calm I had never known Mom got up to notify hospice and call my brothers. She reached for me to come with her but with tears streaming I told her I had to stay. Until hospice arrived I had to stay, I had to know without a doubt he was no  longer here. I’m not sure how long passed, it may have been 20 or 30 minutes but I sat with Daddy until the sweet lady from hospice arrived and assured me he finally was at peace.

Jumping backs weeks before that I knew the time was drawing nearer and I decided to do a slideshow of Daddy’s life. After making it and watching it I realized something was missing but I didn’t know how to fix it. We had a video of  Dad & Mom’s surprise anniversary and not only did it show Daddy alive and healthy, it had his voice.  It had his gestures and his laugh, it had every part of Daddy that I knew I wanted to forever remember. It wasn’t a professional video but to me it was worth more than life itself. So I took it to my friends Jennifer & Tim with In Motion and had them add it in.  After Daddy passed we had it playing at his wake but until this past week I couldn’t bring the strength to watch it again. But I knew one day, although it hurt it would also bring comfort.  So now that I can feel the comfort I want to share it with all of you. Daddy may no longer physically be here but after rewatching the video, I’m reminded how much of him is still here.  There was one image that reminded me so much of my middle brother John, then I saw one that reminded me of my youngest son Seth, then I saw my oldest brother Jeff speaking and was reminded so much of Daddy in his gestures as he talked.

So take a minute and remember my Daddy with me or if you’ve never met him, meet the guy he has been my hero and biggest cheerleader since my first breathe!!! I love you Daddy more than I could ever express…. your little paparazzi

Jamie & Jordan – engagement session – Emerald Isle NC

So this as well as many other blog posts will be from months ago because now that I have a new blog (and it’s a slower season) I feel motivated to catch up!! So hold on tight and be on the look out for some great posts and  images coming your way!!

After talking to Jamie and Jordan and hearing how much they loved the beach, there was no question on where their session should take place. It was like trying to take a fish out of water, they belonged there.  Their love had grown and developed over their many trips to the beach, so why not capture their love for one another there?!? And let me tell you, it was perfect!! When I asked them to sit in the sand, it was like they were sitting on Cloud 9!! But the best part of the session was ending with everyone’s favorite…ICECREAM!!!!!!! Check it out….

Do you have your business in order

Where are those receipts? Do I need W-2’s or W-4’s? You need what to finish my taxes??

For years as January rolled around I could feel anxiety ripping through me!! Not only did I have to find all the stuff needed for personal taxes but I had to keep up with every thing that happened throughout the entire year with my business.  And for years, as I prepared to meet the tax guy I was overwhelmed and usually on the brink of tears!! I knew I needed help but I just didn’t think I could afford it. Then one day a light went off, I can’t not afford it!! I realized people hire me to take their images because not only did I like to take pictures but I understood it!! I understood the difference between different lenses, I understood lighting, and I understood the importance of making someone feel comfortable in front of the camera.  I understood and I had the equipment and knowledge to make it happen. I was trained to deliver an image the client could love because that was my field.  Making sure my business was in order and which files had to be submitted on which day was not my field.  I didn’t understand it, I didn’t like it, and I definitely wasn’t trained in it. So I decided I needed a CPA.  I needed someone that understood and someone that could guide, well, really hold my hand and just tell me what to do.

The great news is I didn’t have to look far. Alex Pappas with Edwin Gray, CPA has been a family friend for years.  Not only was he trained in the area but I personally knew him.  I knew his character, I knew his personality, I knew his was a professional,  I knew he was liscensed, I knew he had plenty of experience,  and I knew he would have my best interest at heart. When dealing with Alex, I was comforted in the fact he didn’t just have a few months of training, he had years of experience.  As soon as I met with him I felt a sense of relief.  He took the time to explain the importance of having my business set up right.  He explained in simple terms the importance of incorporating and how it could save me money.  He assured me not only would he prepare any forms needed but until I got the hang of keeping things in order, he would send me friendly reminders to make sure it got done. And he has kept every promise. Whether it was quarterly taxes, questions about my sales tax, a notification in the mail…. he has answered and taken care of every one!!

So my question is again, do you have your business in order? If not I would encourage you to set up a meeting with Alex.  If you are self employed it is a great time of year to look at your operating costs to see if there are any advantages you can take advantage of. If you have questions about payroll, taxes, or how to maintain good records he can help.  Trust me, audits are real and if you ever go through one you’ll be glad you have someone that has directed you in the right way!! If you are starting a new business, he is a great resource!  Just having him look over your procedures could be beneficial. And for you guys just filing individual taxes, his fees are as competitive as any other place. The difference is he will take time to do it correctly and you would be using a licensed CPA that does this year round, not just a few months out of the year. So don’t wait give Alex a call at 252-758-7300 or send him an email at

And of course, no post is complete without an image. And this lil one is as cute as they come….

Great reminder Laurie! Sometimes you feel like you have to do everything when you own your own business and it’s nice to have someone remind you that you do not have to be the expert for everything and sometimes you can actually recoup the cost of delegating through less stress and having an expert be on your side.

and then it was new…

For some time I have needed a freshened up look with my blog and site. So here is, just the first of the many changes you’ll be seeing…. my brand spankin new blog!!! I wanted it to be simple and clean but I wanted to incorporate more contact with my clients.  So with this new blog, my clients have a way to comment, share posts they like with just one click on social media, follow me on facebook, twittter, or pinterest or if they need to contact me there is a nice, new contact form.

So as I start 2012, I start with a new focus on my clients. Making sure my clients have a insight to my life and business.  For those that know me, I’m a personable person and it translates through my relationships and images. So welcome to this new journey of my life…. I’m sure it will have dips, twists, and turns but I’m sure it’ll be fun!!

And because no posts should be complete without an image, here’s a few to hold you of my sweet friend Stephanie just a few days before she got married:):)
